Description

Parador de Cangas de Onis - Located just outside the town of Cangas de Onis this 5* Parador, the former Monastery of San Pedro de Villanueva, was declared a National Monument in 1907.

It is set on the banks of the River Sella against the magnificent backdrop of the Picos de Europa mountains. Ideal starting-point from which to discover the delights of the Asturias countryside.

The Parador de Cangas de Onis is a careful combination of old and new. The chapel and cloister are surrounded by archeological remains from the 16th and 17th century while the bedrooms are spacious and modern in the new section of the building which has been perfectly designed to complement the original.

In all there are just 67 tastefully decorated ensuite bedrooms in this Parador. Each room has direct dial phone, air conditioning, central heating, satellite TV, safe and mini-bar.

Additional facilities include a restaurant, bar, private parking, garden area and special access for disabled.

The Parador de Cangas de Onis is an ideal base for a long stay holiday as there is much to see and do in the area and some excellent daytrips to be enjoyed. There are also two challenging golf courses quite close in Ribadasella and Llanes.

Additional information

Cangas de Onis is a little town situated in Eastern Asturias; the rivers Sella and Guena flows through the town. It is well known not only for being the first capital of Spain but for its mountains, caves, paths, lakes and famous Picos de Europa, too.

Cangas de Onis was the first town recognized by the Asturian and Cantabrian leaders at the beginning of the Reconquest (8th century). The town is the main entrance for visitors to the Picos de Europa National Park, and is renowned for is market cheeses such as Cabrales, Beyos and Gamoneu.

In the town itself, the most interesting feature is without a doubt the medieval bridge; more popularly but erroneously known as the Roman bridge.

Excursions from Cangas include the Picos de Europa Mountains and the Sanctuary of Covadonga. From Covadonga, a very steep, scenic roadway leads to the Enol and Ercina lakes, an area of imposing beauty. Here too there is also a fascinating visitor centre dedicated to mining, which once was an important industry in the area.
