The Parador de Guadalupe, built in convent style, rises up on what was the former Hospital of St. John the Baptist, a historical 15th century building.  The Parador is located in the cultural and historical centre of the town, next to the Royal Monastery, a world heritage site.

The hotel which features lovely whitewashed arches adorned with plants is set in a beautiful part of the old town which has been declared a Historical and Artistic Monument.

The hotel`s garden stands out with its luxuriant plants and flowers and its private secluded swimming pool.  Additonally the spacious common rooms and bedrooms all seem to recall the religious function of its origins.

In the hotel´s restaurant simple but delicious local cooking can be enjoyed such as: 'bacalao monacal' (cod, potatoes and spinach), 'ajo blanco extremeno' (garlic dish), 'migas extremenas' (fried breadcrumb dish), 'pollo a lo padre Pedro' (chicken dish), Iberian sausages, 'caldereta de cordero' (lamb stew), chestnut pudding and 'muegado de Guadalupe' (a fried sweet).

Additional information

Set in the foothills of the Sierra de Altamira Guadalupe in the province of Extremadura  is an illustrious town, because of its history and the remarkable monumental patrimony that it preserves. A typical mountain village, it grew under the wing of the Sanctuary-Monastery of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The Monastery, which was declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1993, was commissioned by King Alfonso XI of Castile in the 14th century as a sign of gratitude to the Virgin, after winning the Battle of Salado (1340).

Since its foundation, the Monastery became one of the main pilgrimage centres in Spain. It was also the site of significant events, like the audience that the Catholic Monarchs granted Christopher Columbus to give him the caravels that would take him on his journey to the New World.
