  1. Vitoria-Gasteiz

Vitoria-Gasteiz is the capital of the Basque Country and is considered to have one of the highest standards of living in Europe. Founded in 1181, it still preserves a very fine medieval quarter and has one of the nicest city centres you are likely to see anywhere.

Most of the centre is pedestrianised which makes it ideal for exploring on foot. Enter into the medieval part of Vitoria and you´ll see the Stately homes and Renaissance palaces of Villa Suso, Casa del Cordón (15th century tower with Gothic Hall), Escoriaza-Esquival, Portalón and Montehermoso. Here you also discover the famous Fournier Museum of Playing Cards housed in the Palacio de Bendaña, which holds one of the most important collections of playing cards in the world dating back to 1868 and includes the Thomas de la Rue collection acquired from the British Museum in 1970.

Large sections of the old medieval wall can still be clearly observed too, especially in the Santa María Cathedral; a Gothic temple originally constructed as part of the city’s defensive wall and now one of the most visited sights in the Basque Country.
The restoration of the Santa Maria Cathedral has exposed its guard towers, slitted defensive windows, and long sentry paths. Unlike visiting a museum, you actually witness the on-going process of restoration and experience first-hand, an authentic archaeological site.

The Fine Arts Museum housed in the Palacio de Augusti is well worth visiting and is located on a the lovely Paseo Fray Francisco in front of the Ajuria Enea Mansion: the official residence of the President of the Basque Country. The museum contains Spanish painting and sculpture from the 14th C until the beginning of the 20th C, 20th C Realism, traditional Basque Art and 20th century Avant-garde Art.

In the museum´s garden there are sculptures by Basque artists in their native environment and Romanesque pieces. The Archaeological Museum is fascinating too and is housed in a 16th century Basque home; the House of Guevara-Gobeo-San Juan. Those interested in modern art should not miss the recently opened, Artium Museum.

The Plaza del Machete, Plaza de Espana and the Plaza de la Virgin Blanca are three important and very popular places for eating, drinking and socialing in Vitoria - the heart of the city as it were. One must not forget also Florida Park with it´s lovely gardens: an oasis of peace and calm, which also has two bars and a restaurant.

The main street in Vitoria; lovely tree-lined Calle Dato, has a great variety of excellent retail shops (Zara, Mango, Sfera) as well as handmade confectionary stores, aroma filled cafes and stylish bars. This city also enjoys a marvellous selection of quality restaurants such as Zaldiaran (one Michelin star), Ikea and Dos Hermanas.
