A regional capital and university city on the river Segura, Murcia was founded in 825 by the Moors, following successful irrigation of the surrounding fertile plain. The centre of the modern city is the 18th century square, La Glorieta. The pedestrianized Calle de la Traperia, linking the cathedral and the former marketplace (now the Plaza Santo Domingo), is the city´s main street.
On it stands a gentlmen´s club founded in 1847, the Casino (ask the doorman for permission to look around). It is entered through an Arab-style patio, fashioned on the royal chambers of the Alhambra. The huge romantic ballroom has a highly polished parquet floor and is illuminated by five large crystal chandeliers. A painting covering the ceiling of the ladies´cloakroom depicts the goddess Selene.
The cathedral in Murcia was built in 1394 over the foundation of Murcia´s central mosque, and it was finally consecrated in 1467. The cathedral museum displays grand gothic altarpieces, a frieze from a Roman sarcophagus and the third largest monstrance in Spain.
Francisco Salzillo, one fo Spain´s greatest sculptors, was born in Murcia, and a museum in the Iglesia de Jesus exhibits nine of his pasos - sculptures on platforms. These are carried thorugh the streets of the city on Good Friday morning. The figures are so lifelike that a fellow sculptor is said to have told the men carrying a paso: "Put it down, it will walk by itself".
Places Of Interest
Museo de Tradiciones y Artes Populares - this folk museum stands beside a large water wheel - a copy in iron of the original 15th century wooden wheel. The three galleries display agricultural and domestic items, some of them 300 years old. A traditional, thatched Murcian farmhouse (barraca) forms part of the museum.
Mar Menor (Smaller Sea) - It is really a large lagoon, and the sheltered Mar Menor can be 5ºC warmer in the summer then the Mediterranean. Its high mineral concentrations first drew rest-cure tourists in the early 20th century. They stayed at the older resorts of Santiago de la Ribera and los Alcazares, which still have pretty wooden jetties protruding from their beaches. From either La Manga or Santiago de la Ribera you can make a ferry trip to the Isla Perdiguera, one of the five islands in the Mar Menor. The old saltpans at Lo Pagan, near San Pedro del Pinatar are now a nature reserve.
Costa Calida (Warm Coast) - This is the strip of coast where most of the popular resorts are situated. It is the same area as the above mentioned Mar Menor. Between Cabo de Palos and Cabo Tinoso the few small beaches are dwarfed by cliffs and head lands. These resorts are relatively quiet for Spain.
Lorca - The fertile farmland around this city is an oasis in one of the most arid areas of Europe. The centre of the town, the Plaza de España, is lined with handsome stone buildings. One side is occupied by the Colegiata de San Patricio (Church of St. Patrick). At the head of the square is the town hall, which was formerly a prison.
Caravaca de la Cruz - This town of ancient churches got its fame from its castle which houses the Santuario de la Vera Cruz (sanctuary of the true cross). This is where a double armed-cross is said to have appeared miraculously in 1231, 12 years before the town was seized by the christians. The high light of the Vera Cruz festival is the race of the wine horses, which commemorates the lifting the lifting of a Moorish siege of the castle.
