Conquered in 1264 by King Alfonso X, it played a leading role in the struggle against Moorish Granada. After Columbus' discovery of the New World it rose rapidly. This growth was intensified during the 19th century due to the foundations of numerous world famous Sherry bodegas (wine cellars).

Jerez de la Frontera too is famous all over the world for horse breeding and is the seat of the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art where visitors can enjoy impressive demonstrations by the “Andalusian dancing horses”.
