ABOUT SANTILLANA DEL MAR AND THE SURROUNDING AREA
SANTILLANA DEL MAR, located on the North Cantabrian coast, is one of the most treasured and beautiful towns in all of Spain. Like a living museum, this medieval village grew around the 12th century Romanesque Collegiate church of Santa Juliana. Carefully preserved it features, from the 14th to 18th century, magnificent masonry houses with coats-of-arms: stunning manor houses and small palaces: historic towers such as those of El Merino (14th C) and Don Borja (14th C). It is a delight to walk along its polished cobbled streets and perhaps recall how the town was originally made famous by a neo-classic rogue and his adventures, created by the pen of French author Lesage in his book, Gil Blas de Santillana.
One of Santillana´s most important attractions are the ALTAMIRA CAVES & PALAEOLITHIC ART MUSEUM. "None of us is capable of painting like that" said Pablo Picasso expressing his fascination for the pre-historic art found at Altamira. While visits to the caves are now restricted, the Museum and Reproduction are well worth seeing. Discovered in 1879 by Santander businessman and researcher Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola the cave paintings at Altamira are the most outstanding example of Paleolithic art in the world and are listed by UNESCO as Heritage of Mankind. To protect the integrity of the paintings, access has had to be restricted. However, the fascinating Altamira Museum allows for the complete enjoyment of this historical and artistic collection with life-size replicas of the cave as it was 14.000 years ago and its famous polychromatic paintings.
Other caves in the area; with paintings, which may be visited are MONTE EL CASTILLO (4 caves), COVALANAS, EL PENDO and HORNOS DE LA PEÑA. Please check the timetable with us.
This noble and aristocratic town is set on soft hills that protect its beautiful beach and sheltered port. In perfect harmony with its surroundings, the cemetery at Comillas; situated on the ruins of a 15th century church, represents one of the most symbolic and unusual elements of Comillas. It is dominated by the outstanding modernist sculpture by Llimona, ''''''''El Angel''''''''.
In the centre of Comillas, the Old Square, the parish church and several houses in the plaza form an excellent collection of popular 18th century architecture. Other noteworthy buildings are from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. As a popular retreat for Spanish royalty during the late 19th century, Comillas benefited greatly by these visits including the installation of the first street lighting in Spain, the neo-gothic palace designed by Martorell and Domenech i Muntaner and the modernist palace designed by brilliant Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi called "El Capricho".
**SAN VICENTE DE LA BARQUERA***
San Vicente de la Barquera, fishing village par excellence, represents one of the most famous and beautiful sites on the Cantabrian coast. Possessing a splendid variety of beaches and a pretty estuary peppered with the colour of the many dingiest and boats anchored in it. It is an old village full of charm with a church, castle, remains of a medieval defensive wall, and old and new bridges linking the past with the present. As a backdrop to the village are the majestic Picos de Europa Mountains, with their permanently snow capped peaks. San Vicente´s long fishing tradition is reflected in its respected gastronomy based on fish and seafood of which one of the most delicious dishes is the sorropotún or marmita barquereña, a traditional stew made with tuna fish.
