The Parador de Nerja in Andalusia is beautifully located on a cliffop next to the sea and overlooking the pretty Burriana beach. The beach is easily reached via a private lift/ elevator exclusive to guests staying at the Parador de Nerja.

Málaga

Nerja is located about 39 miles east of Malaga, where the mountains of the Sierra Almijara come down and meet the sea. It is a true Spanish town in a spectacular setting between the mountains and the sparkling Mediterranean. A place where clear fresh mountain water flows abundantly, making the town a paradise of trees and colourful flowers, all year round.

Nerja lies in one of Spains richest farming areas known as the Garden of Europe, in a tropical valley where you will find olive groves, avocado trees, fields of wild strawberries and a great variety of exotic plants all encouraged by an excellent
year round climate.

Being protected from the north by the majestic Sierra Nevada mountain range, Nerja has its own micro-climate and the soft dry air is known to be particularly beneficial to sufferers of respiratory and associated disorders.

Nerja is ideal for exploring on foot. Stroll through the narrow white-washed streets and you will discover interesting court-yards, colourful shops and local people chatting and relaxing in the sun. The old quarter of the town is still virtually unchanged with whitewashed houses with wrought iron terraces overflowing with geraniums, on which a canary can sometimes be heard singing.

The heart of Nerja is its spectacular Balcon de Europa, the "Balcony of Europe", a magnificent promenade along the edge of a towering cliff, once the site of the great Moorish castle, with sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the small coves and beaches below. It is a splendid area paved with marble and lined with palm trees and is the centre of activity for local festivals, or for simply meeting friends at one of the pavement cafes.

Nerja boasts 10 miles of beaches with powdery sand and sparkling clear water. All major water sports are available here, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing. There is a good choice of restaurants and traditional Tapas bars in the centre of Nerja. Or, you may prefer to try one of the beach restaurants where you can enjoy anything from freshly grilled sardines (a local speciality!) to delicious paella, all freshly prepared over a wood fire.

The town´s monuments include the 17th c Church of El Salvador, a charming mixture of Baroque and Moorish styles, and the beautiful Gardens of Capistrano Playa, which descend to Burriana Beach. Nearby are the fascinating Nerja caves with paintings over 20,000 years old and other pre-historic remains. One of the enormous natural caverns has been transformed into a concert hall, where many performances are staged during the summer.
