The 4 star Parador de Zafra (15th C), built on the remains of a Muslim fortress, is a majestic castle-palace.  Its construction as a residence was started in 1437 by the noble Spanish Dukes of Feria.  Past guests have included Hernan Cortes, the great conqueror, who stayed here in Zafra before departing for the New World. 

The Paradors spectacular façade and nine battlement towers guard a regal, grandiose interior, which conserves beautiful coffered ceilings, large chests, ironwork, handrails and other decorative details belonging to the former palace.

The bedrooms are stately, elegant and spacious.  They are all ensuite and have all the comforts you would expect of a 4 star hotel.

Facilities include a seasonal outdoor swimming pool, a beautifully tended garden and a fine restaurant where the best dishes of the region can be sampled in the dining room.  These include tasty lamb stew, 'migas Extremenas' (a fried breadcrumb dish, surprisingly tasty) and 'solomillo iberico al queso de los Ibores' (Iberian sirloin with Ibores cheese).  There is also a fine selection of chesses and wines from Extremadura on offer.

Additional information

Zafra, a mild weather region, is situated in a wide valley between Castellar and the San Crístobal sierra in southern Extremadura.

It was originally a Roman settlement, named Restituta Julia and later, in the 11th century, would be a place dominated by Arabs before King Alfonso IX conquered the town in 1229. The second and ultimate conquest took place in 1241 by King Fernando III known as el Santo.

In 1395 Zafra reached its most important economic period with outstanding markets. Leather and silver crafts were the most important source of wealth. The clothes markets, renowned since the Arabian domination, where also important and were held in the Plaza Chica where merchants from La Rioja, Castilla and Andalucia all came to buy. Nowadays Zafra is most known for its Internacional Cattle Market.

The city is a fascinating mix of old and new. The Plaza Grande , the old noble centre, is surrounded by a colonnaded area, over which there are houses with coats of arms and artistic lattices. The entrance to the Plaza Chica, where the Vara de Medir is sculpted on one of its columns, is located at the Arquillo del Pan. There are also Arabic houses with artistic wrought iron balconies and a fine Court House in the neoclassic style.

The Parador, located in the Duques de Feria palace, was built in 1437 and has an outstanding renaissance style patio, as well as a chapel with a gothic mudejar dome.
