The geography of Asturias appears to be a geological explosion towards the sky. Above all, it is a vertical land of imposing mountains such as thePicos de Europa, where rivers flowing towards the sea have chiselled deep ravines and beautiful river valleys. And then there is more than 190 miles of irregular coastline offering a succession of about 100 beaches, protected fishing harbours and navigable estuaries. The main tourist routes in Asturias are the roads, which cross the land from the sea through the mountains passes, each road more picturesque than the one before. Southern Asturias is separated from Castilla y Leon by the Cordillera Cantabrica mountain barrier. Eastern Asturias is known for its proximity to the sea and the mountains. In fact the stunning Picos de Europa Mountains are only 12 miles from the coast. |
Monumental Cities and Towns
- Oviedo: on the outskirts of Asturias´ delightful capital we find the Pre-Romanesque jewels of San Miguel de Lillo and Santa Maria del Naranco. The 14th century Cathedral and the 9th century La Foncalada fountain are also remarkable.
- Cangas de Onís: here a chapel was built in the 5th century on the site of a Dolmen. A Roman-style medieval bridge welcomes visitors to the town, which is the base for many visitors to the Picos de Europa.
- Gijón: the Roman Hot springs and the Old Quarter are two of the most remarkable sites of this coastal city, hometown of Spanish author Jovellanos. Also has three fine beaches.
- Llanes: beautiful fishing village, of particular interest are San Pedro waterfront promenade, the Church of Santa Maria and the Palace of the Dukes of Estrada.
- Salas: from the 16th century are both the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria la Mayor and the Palace of Valdés Salas.
History and Geography
To trace Asturias´ historical origins one has to travel far back in time. To the Palaeolithic, the age of the great cave painters. Many centuries later the Roman Empire sought to colonise these lands, and after hard-fought wars, the Romans were finally able to set about their cultural and economic colonisation of the Asturs. Later the Moorish invasion left few scars on the Principality. Many years have since elapsed, but visiting Asturias means to feel its history.
Seventy-eight municipalities make up a region that covers over 10,500 square kilometres with a 375-kilometre strip of coastline. To the south lies the Picos de Europa National Park and to the north the coastal cliffs forming hundreds of beaches. Asturias has a population of 1,100,000 a mild climate and plentiful rainfall. Temperatures average around 12ºC in winter (except in mountain areas) and 20ºC in summer.

Cuisine
Evidence of the rich cuisine in Asturias can be found in the myriad of festivals held throughout the year. The regional dish is fabada (a slow cooked fava bean stew). Famous also are the cheeses especially those from Cabrales and Gamonedo. The coastal waters provide a variety of shellfish and the rivers boast an abundance of salmon and trout. Cider, poured ceremoniously from a bottle held overhead, is the main local beverage and desserts such as casadielles (made with walnuts) and frixuelos (sweet pancakes with honey) also should be sampled.

- July: Cider festival (Nava).
- August: International descent by canoe of the River Sella (Arriondas).
- September: San Mateo and the Day of America (Oviedo), a tribute to Spaniards and Asturian emigrants worldwide.
