Spend the day in the university city of Oviedo, the capital of Asturias. While there don't miss out on seeing the wonderful Gothic Cathedral, the San Tirso Church and Oviedo's Archaeology Museum. Just to the north are two of the region's most magnificent Pre-Romanesque churches: Santa Maria del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo. Oviedo also has a terrific variety of shops, bars and restaurants. Depart Oviedo for Cangas de Onis (Cangas), one of the main gateways to the Picos de Europa mountains. Cangas has an impressive Roman bridge, a dolmen and the 15th century Chapel of Santa Cruz. On the way visit Nava and the Cider Museum: Infiesto, famous for the Virgen de la Cueva and the caves and Arriondas, with its spectacular panoramic views from the Mirador del Fito. Once in the Picos de Europa mountains you arrive in Covadonga with its Neo-Romanesque basilica. Afterwards enjoy a splendid, mountainous scenic drive to the Covadonga lakes. An unforgettable day visiting the Picos de Europa mountains, Europe’s largest national park, which is still home to some of Europe´s last remaining wild brown bears. Rugged mountains and green pastures will be the order of the day. Heading into Cantabria one can take the cable car into the Picos Mountains at Fuente De.
