TOUR A

Day ONE

Arrive in Bilbao the largest Basque city, which in recent times has enjoyed a well planned revitalisation bringing a new lease of life to this very charming old port. Sights include the famous Guggenheim Museum, the Fine Arts Museum, a splendid Old Quarter, a lovely riverside walkway, a funicular ride that affords terrific views of the city and not forgetting the Puente Colgante; a remarkable Hanging Transporter Bridge built in 1893 and still in use today. Accommodation of your choice in Bilbao.

Day TWO

Travel east visiting the protected biotopes of the Urdaibai estuary home to a wide variety of birds and fish. In the area visit the impressive hermitage-topped islet of San Juan de Gastelugatxe, or the Santimamiñe caves containing a chamber with drawings of animals by Cro-Magnon around 11,000 BC. Next travel to Gernika, a sacred place for all Basques. For centuries Basque leaders held their meetings under an oak here; the Tree of Gernika. The town was target of a bombing raid in World War II, which was the inspiration for Picasso´s famous painting. Accommodation of your choice in Bilbao.

Day THREE

Next travel to the province of Cantabria and the shire of Saja Nansa. With two nature parks, Saja Besaya and Oyambre, you will find here amazing landscapes and finely preserved rural towns, of which Barcena Mayor stands out. History, nature and tradition are the most important concepts of the Cantabria region. There is a wealth of interesting towns and villages to be found in the area. Day FOUR

Today visit the Cares Gorge situated in the Picos de Europa National Park, which can be walked in just one day, and provides impressive landscapes as it winds between the three provinces of Cantabria, Castilla y León & Asturias. The Picos de Europa National Park is the biggest in Europe providing a wide variety of terrain and great trails for walking and hiking. Visitor’s can also take the cable car from Fuente Dé up into the Picos mountains. Accommodation of your choice in the area.

Day FIVE

Crossing into Asturias visit the the Somiedo Nature Park located in the south west of Asturias, in the mountains bordering León. A variety of can be found here including 18 glacial lakes and several hidden villages. The highest population of wild brown bears, an endangered species, can be found in this area. Accommodation of your choice in the area.

Day SIX

Next to Os Ancares in Galicia, a succession of valleys and arched crests that joins both León and Galicia. Plenty of rural spaces and small charming villages. The Os Ancares mountain range is characterised by the existence of a wide network of enclosed valleys. Nearby visit the town of O Cebreiro containing a church from the 9th century where, in the 13th century, a miracle supposedly happened. Here also see some Celtic pallozas (ancient homes) that still survive. Accommodation of your choice in the area.

Day TWO

Visit the protected biotopes of Urdaibai, the hermitage-topped islet San Juan de Gastelugatxe, Santimamiñe caves and Gernika. Combine this with the Nature Reserve of Urkiola, where you can visit its Sanctuary featuring a Baroque tower. Anboto is the most highlighted mountain in the reserve, having inspired many legends about witchcraft. In the area the charming baroque village of Otxandio is also worth a visit. Day THREE

Visit the Entzia Natural park; on the eastern side of the Basque Country, that features, like many other Basque sierras, several traces of prehistoric culture. Apart from fabulous mountains you can also enjoy the Estibaliz Sanctuary, a Romanesque jewel dating from the 13th century and the Dolmens of Sorginetxe and Egileor, of great historical importance due to their superb preservation. Day FOUR

Next travel to the province of Cantabria and the shire of Saja Nansa. Rupestrian Art. There are several examples of this art in Cantabria with Altamira Caves in Santillana del Mar being the most important but not the only example of this art in the region. Altamira Caves are no longer open on a daily basis to the general public in order to maintain their prehistoric legacy. However exact replicas of the caves have been superbly recreated and can be seen in the Museum and Visitors centre nearby. Close to Altamira you can find the Puente Viesgo Caves and Santiyan Caves. Day SIX
