This suggested itinerary takes you across Andalusia, that region in southern Spain in which different cultures combine to bring art, history, modern civilization, monumental cities, stunning coastline and a pleasing climate together in one.  Stay in specially chosen Paradors where you will enjoy a friendly welcome and be able to discover the true character of each place visited.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY (arriving in Malaga)

Day 1 & 2: 2 nights at the Parador de Malaga Gibralfaro

Arrive in Malaga, collect your included rental car and drive to your hotel.  Malaga is the major coastal city of Andalucia and is a genuine and typical Andaluz city with a gritty individualism unspoilt by mass tourism and the passage of time. You can visit the Cathedral, the churches, the museums, the Alcazaba and the Castillo of Gibralfaro.  Also visit the newly opened Picasso Museum, dedicated to the great artist who was born in Malaga.  Should you feel the urge to visit the most popular towns that make up the resort area known as the Costa del Sol then simply head west for Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Marbella and Puerto Banus. You cannot miss a visit to Antequera –another charming town- and the lunar landscape of “El Torcal de Antequera”, a beautiful zone characterized by a kárstica formation, which forms figures you haven’t seen before.

Day 3 & 4: 2 nights at the Parador de Ronda, province of Malaga.

Next drive northwest to Ronda, a charming town which have a lovely “old town” that is a pleasure to discover on foot.  It is one of the oldest cities of Spain, and, as a whole, is declared a national monument.  Ernest Hemingway was an avid fan of Ronda and especially going to bullfights in the Maestranza bullring considered to be the oldest in Spain.   “El Puente Nuevo” (the new bridge) which spans the El Tajo Gorge is at a height of  160 m and provides spectacular views into the deep chasm and over la Serranía de Ronda. In the vicinity of Ronda you can also visit the Pilela Cave –with Paleolitical paintings - and the archaeological site of Acinipo.  Should you wish to visit the Costa del Sol, Ronda is just 31miles North of Marbella.  Or indeed a tour of the pueblos blancos “white villages” (Grazalema, Ubrique , Gaucín, etc )is also highly recommended.

Day 5 & 6: 2 nights Parador de Arcos de la Frontera, province of Cadiz.

Drive west to Arcos de la Frontera which is a delightful town, with a castle and Santa Maria Church at the top, spreading over a high rocky ridge with the River Guadalete at its foot.  From here you can also visit Cadiz which Old Quarter is superbly preserved with colonial style buildings more reminiscent of towns in south America or Cuba than anything normally found in Spain.  See also the towns & villages that are on the coast known as the Costa de la Luz.  It is quite unspoilt and holds many surprises such as the Roman ruins located overlooking the magnificent and peaceful Playa de Bolonia near Zahara de Los Atunes.  Also be sure to visit the village of Vejer de la Frontera which is one of the prettiest white villages in Andalucia.  A visit to Jerez de la Frontera is also worthwhile to see the Royal School of Equestrian Art and the Sandeman Sherry bodega located near to the school.

Day 7 & 8: 2 nights Parador de Carmona, province of Sevilla.

Drive North East to Carmona, a village that is very well situated in the province just above Seville.  In Carmona the Alacar del Rey Don Pedro and its Roman Necropolis are of particular interest.  As are the town hall and old city walls.  Excellent day trips include Seville which offers much to see and do. The Old Jewish Quarter holds many delightful surprises, as does the Plaza de España and the surrounding Parque de Maria Luisa with its marvellous gardens.  Visit the cathedral and the Moorish “La Giralda” tower, the spectacular gardens of the Alcazaba and be sure also to stroll in the Triana district, just across the Guadalquiver River, so famous for its ceramic workshops, pretty tiled patios and flamenco music.

Day 9 & 10: 2 nights Parador de Granada.

Next head east to historic Granada which is scenically located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains. As it was the last Moorish capital in the Iberian Peninsula so you can look forward to an abundance of artistic grandeur embracing Moorish Palaces and Christian Renaissance treasures such as the priceless Alhambra Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also important are the Generalife & gardens, the Albaicín district and adjacent Sacromonte famous for its gypsy cave dwellings and flamenco music. The province of Granada is characterised by geographical and scenic diversity; if you have time drive to La Alpujarra, Guadix or Montefrío.
