HIGHLIGHTS: Must-sees in Soria include two cultural and monumental points of reference which are characteristic of the city: San Polo and San Saturio, with a poplar-lined avenue along the riverbank. The nearby towns of Almarza, Narros, Golmayo and Arnacon have all retained their rural appearance. In Garray, less than 15 kilometers from the provincial capital, you will find the fascinating Numancia archeological site - a former CeltIberian settlement - which includes educational facilities. Also of interest are Burgo de Osma town with itīs impressive cathedral and city walls and the nearby Rio Lobos Nature Reserve.
HIGHLIGHTS: The town of Santo Domingo is an excellent setting-off point for discovering the Upper Rioja wine region and its wealth of heritage linked to wine and viniculture, famous throughout the world. We recommend a visit to the Ontanon Winery/Museum (Logrono), the Haro Enology Station in Haro, the incredible Dinastia Vivanco Winery & Museum in charming Briones, as well as some of the vineyards in the Upper Rioja region which are open to visitors. Another possibility is following the Wine Architecture Route (Gehry, Calatrava & Moneo are just some of the architects who have designed wineries in Rioja). In Santo Domingo you can explore the exenta, or stand-alone, cathedral tower, the cathedral itself (high altar, the saints mausoleum, hens cage (thereīs a famous story related), cloister). Nearby lies the important town of San Millan de la Cogolla home to Yuso & Suso Monasteries containing the first written texts in the Spanish and Basque languages. Other highlights include the monastery of Santa Maria La Real in Najera and the monastery of Santa Maria del Salvador in Canas.
HIGHLIGHTS: Rioja is the land of wine, an exceptional place where this product achieves its greatest expression. Near Calahorra you can discover the wineries of the Lower Rioja, including Torres Librada (Alfaro) and Vina Herminia (Aldeanuela del Ebro). In Calahorra, we recommend exploring the cathedral, which is mostly in the Gothic style, and the Episcopal palace (16th 17th centuries), late 16th-century Convent of the Discalced Carmelites (Carmelitas Descalzas), and neoclassical Santiago Church (17th and 18th-century). We also recommend taking a trip to Arnedillo, a picturesque natural mineral spa town and also Enciso, famous for itīs remarkably preserved dinosaur footprints.
HIGHLIGHTS: As you approach Olite and see the town silhouetted against the horizon, you will feel that much awaits your discovery. The town offers you the opportunity to discover the palace of the Kings of Navarre, Santa Maria la Real Church, San Pedro Apostol Church, and Carlos III Square. You can explore the world of wine in the Navarre Museum of Wine and Vineyards, which is located in the same lovely square as the Parador. Other highlights include the Piedemonte, Marco Real and Bodega Ochoa wineries as well as the nearby Oliva Monastery, a Cistercian abbey which was given this rank in 1948, following a restoration. The city of Pamplona can also be easily visited from Olite as well as the Bardenas Reales which is a semi-dessert landscape stretching for over 42000 hectares and which doubled as Kazakhstan in the James Bond movie The World Is Not Enough.
HIGHLIGHTS: Located to the north of the Cinco Villas (Five Towns) region, Sos has retained a medieval atmosphere in the steep streets of its center. Its proximity to Navarre made this an important military site, and King Fernando the Catholic was born here. Of interest to visitors is the 11th-century San Esteban Parish Church, and the ruins of the castle. The walls, which date from a later period, surround the village, intermingling with the houses built right up against them. The key element is La Fuente Alta Tower, also known as La Reina. Not to be missed is a visit to the nearby Benedictine monastery of San Salvador de Leyre, where you can listen to the singing of the monks, and Javier Castle; birthplace of Saint Francis Xavier.
