UNSPOILT SPAIN TOUR - CHARMING SPAIN TOUR
The promise of this Unspoilt Spain tour is to take you off the beaten path, to beautiful and lesser known places in northern Spain known mainly to locals; to sleep in unique, affordable, personally inspected and charming accommodation run by friendly hosts; to sample delicious local cuisine and to experience a variety of stunning scenery. Great sightseeing, opportunites to walk, hike or enjoy exploring small towns and villages with no rush or fixed plan. Feeling like youīre really seeing a different and unspoilt Spain. All of this without any excessive or strenuous drives. Totally relaxing.
We suggest flying into Bilbao or Santander airport where you will collect your pre-arranged rental car at the airport. Next you will make your way south heading inland via the Mena Valley until you reach San Pelayo. Whatīs so great about San Pelayo ? Well, firstly the accommodation and your hosts are delightful and dining here is a real treat. The rural village is the stuff of picture postcards. You can enjoy winding down here, go for hikes, youīll probably dream about buying a house in the area, a getaway. Other clients have and one even followed through on their dream.
Exploring the nearby "Merindades" region is highly recommended. The town of Frias is hardly known by foreigners but itīs considered one of the most beautiful towns in Spain. So too is the drive along the River Ebro to Sobron. In fact itīs spectacular. Should you feel like a taste of city life, then continue down to Burgos. Itīs definitely worth seeing especially the cathedral which is remarkable. A little further south and you can visit Covarrubias where the famous chanting monks live.
Day 3 & 4 Accommodation in Arnedillo, Rioja region
Next set off for the Rioja region. You will drive through some lovely landscape featuring vineyards, the Sierra de Cantabria mountain range, charming towns such as Briones where the Dinastia Vivanco winery and museum is a must see. As are are the Monasteries of Suso and Yuso, both World Heritage sites.
After all this you will head to Arnedillo which is an altogether different setting. Here, more than vineyards you find the landscape filled with olive and fruit trees, herbs and lavander. It's very Andalusian in appearance. What's so special about Arnedillo is that the river flowing through the town is a natural spring with a temperature of around 38 degrees. This is what feeds the local spa. You can enjoy the spa or just do what the locals do and enjoy the warm pools in the river while overhead vultures circle. It's marvellous.
If you enjoy walking, there passes through Arnedillo the old railway which has now been turned into a walking and cycling trail - one of the Spanish "Green Ways". It's a great way to enjoy the scenery. You can also discover the Dinosaur trails in nearby Enciso. Yor accommodation is really charming as is your host, Ignacio.
The next stage of this Unspoilt Spain Tour takes you north to the Basque Country coast. The drive is lovely and reminds one of Austria in places. You can visit Pamplona on the way, a charming city or drive through the interior which although slower is very picturesque.
The town of Hondarriba is delightful. It has two distinct parts, the medieval quarter and the Fishermans district. Both are atmospheric and contain a great variety of traditional bars and superb restaurants. Hondarriba is a great base to explore the Basque coast as well the city classy city by the bay - San Sebastian, famed the world over for its top chefs and delicious cuisine. You can also check out the fishing town of Getaria where lunch at a fish restaurant by the pier is a must accompanied by the locally produced txakoli wine.
To finish off this tour we have a real treat. Staying in the Ayala Valley, just south of Bilbao at a beautifully restored Basque caserio. Itīs a wonderful place to end the tour and enjoy first class hospitality and cuisine. You can visit Bilbao on the way or avoid the city and perhaps head to the Gorbea National park. Either way, is ideal to finsh this unspoilt Spain tour.
