Tourist Taxes in Spain

Tourist taxes apply in certain regions and cities in Spain and are payable locally at the accommodation.

Barcelona & Catalonia Tourist Tax

  • A tourist tax imposed by the Government of Catalonia applies to guests over the age of 16 staying in tourist accommodation.
  • In Barcelona city, an additional tourist tax imposed by Barcelona City Hall is also applied.
  • From 1 April 2026, the Catalonia tourist tax has increased significantly. Indicative regional rates are approximately:
  • 5-star hotels: around €7 per person, per night (regional tax)
  • 4-star hotels: around €3 to €4 per person, per night (regional tax)
  • Barcelona City applies an additional municipal surcharge currently around €3 to €4+ per person, per night.
  • As a result, the total combined tourist tax in Barcelona is typically in the region of approximately €7 to €12+ per person, per night depending on the category of accommodation.
  • In the rest of Catalonia (outside Barcelona), rates are lower and generally range up to approximately €4 to €5 per person, per night depending on the category.
  • Stays are generally capped at a maximum of 7 nights for tax purposes.
  • Totally Spain does not collect nor include these local taxes in our pricing.

Balearic Islands Tourist Tax (Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza)

  • A sustainable tourism tax (ecotasa) applies to tourist accommodation.
  • The tax varies by accommodation category and is typically:
  • 5-star and 4-star superior hotels: €4 per person, per night
  • 4-star and 3-star superior hotels: €3 per person, per night
  • Lower category hotels and apartments: €2 per person, per night
  • Hostels, guesthouses and campsites: €1 per person, per night
  • Guests under the age of 16 are exempt.
  • From the 9th night in the same establishment, the tax is reduced by 50%.
  • Seasonal adjustments may apply.
  • This tax is payable locally at the accommodation.

Galicia Tourist Tax (Santiago de Compostela and A Coruña)

  • Local tourist taxes have been introduced at municipal level in Galicia.
  • The first cities applying this tax are Santiago de Compostela and A Coruña.
  • The amount is modest and typically in the region of approximately €1 to €2.50 per person, per night depending on the accommodation.
  • The tax is payable locally at the accommodation.
  • Other municipalities in Galicia may introduce similar local taxes over time.

Tourist Taxes in Portugal (Lisbon, Porto and Other Regions)

The Tourist Occupancy Tax is collected by accommodation providers and is payable locally. It is not included in and is separate from the price of your accommodation.

This tax applies in Lisbon and Porto and has also been introduced in a growing number of municipalities across Portugal.

  • In Lisbon, the tax is currently €4 per person, per night (maximum 7 nights).
  • In Porto, the tax is currently €3 per person, per night (maximum 7 nights).
  • In other destinations including Sintra, Cascais, the Algarve and the Douro Valley, the tax typically ranges between approximately €1 and €3 per person, per night.
  • The amount, age thresholds and maximum number of nights vary depending on the municipality.
