At Totally Spain, we are proud to call San Mames de Meruelo, part of the nearby municipality of Arnuero in Cantabria, our home. This picturesque coastal region, nestled across the bay from Santander and on the path of the famous coastal Camino de Santiago, is not only a stunning setting but also a place with a rich historical legacy.

In fact, this area was the birthplace of truly remarkable individuals whose achievements resonate far beyond its borders.

We find inspiration in their stories, as they reflect the spirit of discovery, creativity, and dedication that we aim to bring to our travel experiences.

• Juan de la Cosa (c. 1450–1510): A pioneering navigator and cartographer who owned and captained the Santa María on Christopher Columbus’s first voyage. He is celebrated for creating the earliest European world map to include the Americas.
• Juan de Castillo (1470–1552): A master architect behind five UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the iconic Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon.
• Alejandro de Gargollo: A renowned bell founder who cast "La Gorda," Spain’s largest bell, located in Toledo Cathedral.
• Salvador Hedilla (1882–1917): A trailblazing aviator and the first to successfully fly across the Mediterranean from Barcelona to Palma de Mallorca.
