If you're staying in Zaragoza or traveling between Madrid and Barcelona, why not visit the beautiful natural park of Monasterio de Piedra (Stone Monastery) located in Nuevalos, just a few kilometers off the main A-2 motorway? This hidden gem offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue.

The natural park boasts stunning scenery, featuring lush vegetation and fascinating rock formations created by the erosive action of the Rio Piedra. The park's serene environment provides a peaceful retreat, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

A visit to the Monasterio de Piedra consists of two main parts: the natural park and the monastery. Note that while the natural park is open all day, the monastery and its surrounding buildings close for lunch between 1.15pm and 3pm, which will determine the order in which you decide to visit the two areas. Arriving in the morning, it's a good idea to tour the monastery first.

Historically, the monastery was initially built by the Moors as a defensive fort. When it was conquered by Alfonso II of Aragon in 1194, the entire area was given to Cistercian monks who constructed the monastery and lived there for around 700 years. The monastery itself is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture, with its cloisters, chapter house, and the impressive abbey church, offering a glimpse into the monastic life of the past.

The walk around the natural park area takes around two hours, winding around fantastic waterfalls, lakes, and caves. A particular highlight is the Cola de Caballo waterfall, which plunges 50 meters to the lake below. Here, you can walk into the hidden Iris Cave, an enchanting experience that allows you to feel the power and beauty of nature up close.

In addition to its natural and historical attractions, the Monasterio de Piedra offers various activities and amenities. The on-site hotel and spa provide a luxurious stay, allowing visitors to extend their visit and fully immerse themselves in the tranquility of the surroundings. The park also features a traditional restaurant where you can savor local Aragonese cuisine, making it a perfect spot for lunch after a morning of exploration.

For those interested in horticulture, the park's botanical garden showcases a diverse range of plant species, both native and exotic. The garden is meticulously maintained and offers a peaceful setting for a leisurely stroll. The park's aviary, home to a variety of birds, adds to the charm and diversity of the experience.

The Monasterio de Piedra is also known for its wine production, and visitors can take guided tours of the vineyard and wine cellar. Tasting sessions are available, offering a delightful way to sample some of the region's finest wines while learning about the local viticulture.

Whether you're captivated by its historical significance, enchanted by its natural beauty, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, the Monasterio de Piedra has something for everyone. Let us plan your visit to this unique destination and discover the many wonders it has to offer.
