Although it attracts huge crowds in the height of summer, the walled town of Obidos is always well worth a visit. It was captured from the Moors by King Afonso Henriques, the Founder of Portugal, in 1148, and you can even stay in the fine castle, now a Pousada hotel, which overlooks and dominates its surroundings. 

Declared a national monument,  Obidos is located in the Leiria District. It has a romantic ambience with its medieval walls and maze of narrow cobblestone streets which are a delight to stroll amongst, as they echo the footsteps of the royals and commoners from the past. The small squares and characterful houses with their Manueline porticoes add charm to the town, their white walls and blue trimmings complemented by flower boxes filled with a riot of colors.  Many fine examples of religious and civil architecture from the town’s golden days provide an abundance of reasons to come here.

The local cuisine includes a wonderful bouillabaisse made with fish from the nearby Lagoon, which pairs perfectly with the wines of the region of Oeste. Also be sure to try the famous Ginjinha de Obidos (sour cherry brandy), which can be enjoyed in various locales throughout the town, preferably drunk from a small, edible chocolate cup.
