Although it attracts huge crowds in the height of summer, the walled town of Obidos is always well worth a visit. Captured from the Moors by King Afonso Henriques, the Founder of Portugal, in 1148, Obidos boasts a rich history and a romantic ambiance. Visitors can even stay in the fine castle, now a Pousada hotel, which overlooks and dominates its surroundings.

Declared a national monument, Obidos is located in the Leiria District. It has a captivating medieval charm with its well-preserved walls and a maze of narrow cobblestone streets that echo the footsteps of royals and commoners from the past. The town's small squares and characterful houses, adorned with Manueline porticoes, add to its appeal. The white walls and blue trimmings of these buildings are complemented by flower boxes filled with vibrant colors, creating a picturesque scene.

Obidos is renowned for its fine examples of religious and civil architecture from its golden days. The Church of Santa Maria, with its beautiful interior and Renaissance tombs, is a must-see. The charming Capela de Sao Martinho and the impressive Igreja de Santiago, now a bookstore, are also worth a visit. The town's aqueduct, built in the 16th century, and the ancient town gate with its striking azulejos (ceramic tiles) depicting the Passion of Christ, further enhance Obidos' historical allure.

The local cuisine in Obidos is a delightful experience. A standout dish is the bouillabaisse made with fresh fish from the nearby Lagoon, perfectly paired with the wines of the Oeste region. Visitors should not miss the opportunity to try the famous Ginjinha de Obidos (sour cherry brandy), traditionally served in small, edible chocolate cups, adding a sweet twist to this local favorite.

For a unique cultural experience, visit Obidos during one of its many festivals. The Obidos Medieval Market, held in July, transforms the town into a lively medieval fair with jousting, traditional music, and artisans showcasing their crafts. The Obidos International Chocolate Festival, held in spring, is a paradise for chocolate lovers, featuring elaborate chocolate sculptures and delicious treats.

Obidos is also a hub for arts and crafts. The town is dotted with artisan shops where you can find handmade ceramics, embroidery, and other local crafts, making it a perfect place to pick up unique souvenirs.

For nature enthusiasts, the nearby Obidos Lagoon offers opportunities for bird watching, kayaking, and paddleboarding. The scenic beauty of the lagoon, combined with its rich biodiversity, makes it a great destination for outdoor activities.

A visit to Obidos is not complete without exploring its castle. The Castle of Obidos, now a luxurious Pousada hotel, offers breathtaking views of the town and the surrounding countryside. Staying here allows you to immerse yourself in history while enjoying modern comforts.

Whether you're exploring its medieval streets, savoring its culinary delights, or participating in its vibrant festivals, Obidos offers a rich tapestry of experiences. Let us plan your visit to this enchanting town and discover its many charms.
