Sitges sits on the Costa Dorada, about 40 minutes south of Barcelona, and has been a favourite escape for barceloneses for well over a century. The appeal is easy to understand within an hour of arriving: a compact Old Town rising above the sea, a long seafront promenade, and a series of sheltered beaches that stay walkable and civilised even in high summer.

The town's character was shaped in the 19th century by the Indianos — Catalans who made their fortunes in Cuba and the Americas and returned home to build the modernist and colonial-style villas that still define its streets. That legacy gives Sitges an architectural richness unusual for a town of its size, best explored on foot and anchored by a visit to the Cau Ferrat Museum, former home of the artist Santiago Rusiñol and one of the finest small museums in Catalonia.

What makes Sitges work is the combination: a walkable historic centre, genuinely good restaurants, sea views from almost everywhere, and an unhurried pace that Barcelona cannot offer. It suits a relaxed day trip with a private guide, or an overnight stay for travellers who prefer a coastal base within easy reach of the city.
